Tripbooksdesign system / lab 20 / the finishing pass
Lab 20 / six asks before the system ships
The finishing pass.
Six items arrived together: rebalance the rail, bring back the platform update bar, complete the top bar with the user pill, the theme switch and the bell, rename the AI to TAI, settle the trip container mark, and open the intelligence layer. Five are ruled below, including the trip container mark, researched against alternatives because it will be one of the most clicked targets on the platform and ruled: the TRP chip. The intelligence layer is opened as a named workstream with draft laws, waiting on the chart library discussion.

01 / the rail, rebalanced
Entity on top, module on the bottom.
Two changes. The entity card loses its label: "Northline Travel LLC" over "United States · USD" says everything the label said, in less ink. The module switcher moves to the foot of the rail, so the rail now opens with whose books you are in, spends its length on where you can go, and closes with which application you are holding. Top and bottom anchor each other and the nav breathes between them.
The full frame below carries every ruling in this lab at once: the update bar over everything, the rebalanced rail, the completed top bar, TAI in the command field, and the trip container mark closing each row.

Entity cardName and billing country · currency only. No label. It is the first thing in the frame; nothing else looks like it.
Module cardFoot of the rail, same white card treatment, unlabelled like the entity card (ruled 20 Aug). Position does the disambiguation: top is the books, bottom is the application.
The nav betweenFlexes to fill. On short viewports the nav scrolls; the entity and module cards never leave the frame.
Switch affordanceBoth cards carry the paired-chevron mark, the one glyph that means "this is a switcher" platform wide.
Ruled 20 Aug
No label on either card. The card treatment and the fixed positions carry the meaning: the top card is the books, the foot card is the application.
02 / the update bar
News gets one line above everything.
The platform update bar returns. It spans the full frame, above the rail and the top bar, because a release belongs to the platform, not to a page. It is news, not alerting: the ink strip carries no severity hue, no count, and never competes with the bell. One release, one line, one link to the update post.

Height32px, ink ground, paper text. Present only while an unread release exists.
CopyMono UPDATE tag, release name in weight, one plain sentence. No screenshots, no emoji, no severity.
Link"Read the update" opens the release post in the changelog. The whole bar is not a link; only the link is.
DismissalThe × stores the release id per user. The bar returns only for the next release. No "remind me later".
One at a timeTwo unread releases show the newest; the changelog holds the rest. The bar never stacks.
03 / the top bar, completed
The bell and the person holding the session.
The right end of the top bar was placeholder squares until now. It is settled as two things in fixed order: the bell and the user pill. The theme switch lives inside the pill’s opened account menu (ruled 20 Aug), where it reads as three plain words: Light, Dark, System. The pill is the only element in the frame that shows the signed-in identity, so it carries all three facts: avatar, email, role.

The bellLucide bell, square caps. The dot appears only when something is broken, per the notification law: the bell counts broken, not unread.
The theme switchA row in the account menu, in words: Light, Dark, System, the current one marked. Ruled out of the top bar 20 Aug; theme is set once in a while, not held in the frame.
The user pillAvatar, email, role. Email in language ink, role as a mono key. Opens the account menu: profile, preferences, theme, sign out.
Order is fixedBell, then pill, always. The pill anchors the corner on every route; muscle memory is a feature.
At 768The pill collapses to the avatar alone; email and role move into the opened menu. Nothing is dropped, only folded.
Why email and not the display name
Fadi asked for avatar, email and role, and the choice is right on its own merits: on a multi-entity platform the email is the login identity, unique and auditable, while two staff can share a display name. The display name lives in the opened account menu.
04 / the agent is named
TAI, in three letters.
Ruled: the platform agent, until now "Tripbooks AI", is TAI. Short enough to live inside a journal line, a chip, a delegation header and a command prompt without bending any grammar. TAI stays an actor named in words: no robot glyph, no sparkle icon, no special colour. The name is the brand.
Standing rule touched
This supersedes the 5 Aug naming ruling that every AI surface says "Tripbooks AI". The legal duties under that ruling survive the rename: users must still be told they are dealing with an AI, and Anthropic remains a disclosed sub-processor. Legal pages and first-run copy expand the name once: "TAI, the Tripbooks AI". The repo standing rule will be updated in a coordinated window.

The prompt surface is the command bar
TAI is a prompt interface woven into the platform, and the platform already has a prompt: the command bar. Anything typed that does not parse as a reference, a route or a saved search falls through to TAI. One field, three depths: jump, search, ask. TAI answers inside the palette with the answer first and its evidence as chips, and every action it proposes crosses the same delegation gate as everywhere else.

No glyphTAI has no icon anywhere. It is a name in the actor position, same registers as human actors.
Fall-throughUnparsed command input goes to TAI. The parse echo still runs first; references and routes always win over conversation.
Same gatesTAI acts within delegation and proposes above it. The rename changes zero permissions.
05 / the most clicked control on the platform · ruled
The trip container mark.
Every transactional row ends with the way into its trip container, the spine that holds enquiry, quotations, booking, services and money for one trip. Agents will hit this control hundreds of times a day, so it earns real research. Four candidates, rendered in the row they would live in:
A · Layers iconLucide layers, the "stack of things" metaphor.

The evaluation
CandidateWord lawLearnableScan noiseVerdict
A · LayersbendstaughtlowPretty, but "layers" is a metaphor for the concept, not the platform's own word for it. Also claimed by the marketplace's rate stack.
B · RoutebendsweakhighReads as "itinerary" or "map", which the container is not. The curve fights the square-cap icon grammar.
C · TRP chipobeysinstantlowTRP already IS the container's name everywhere references appear. The word does the work; no metaphor to teach. Reads at 9px because it is three capitals.
D · Spine glyphbendstaughtlowHonest drawing of the concept, but it is a new glyph to learn and a custom outlier in a Lucide set.
Recommendation: the TRP chip, pinned
C wins by the system's own law: an icon may not replace a word that is doing work, and TRP is the word. It is the only candidate that requires no teaching, because agents already read TRP- references all day. Three interaction rules complete it:
Hit targetThe cell, not the chip: the full 31px row height by 44px width is clickable. The chip is the label, the cell is the button.
Pinned rightWhen a table scrolls horizontally the TRP column pins to the right edge, the mirror of the pinned identity column on the left. The way into the container never scrolls away.
Hover tells the truthHover raises the full reference and the container's shape: TRP-4KM2E8 · 1 enquiry · 2 quotations · 1 booking. Click opens the container. No dropdown, no menu.
Ruled 20 Aug
Option C, the TRP chip. Pinned right when the table scrolls, full-cell hit target, hover reveals the container shape. A and D remain above as the record of what lost and why.
06 / a workstream opens
The intelligence layer.
The sixth ask is bigger than a component: a layer where the interface itself reports what the data is doing, beyond charts. A pill that pulses while a rate is moving. A stroke that traces a trend behind a figure. A glyph that wears a relationship's shape. The RSS radar from the old platform is the founding example. This section opens the workstream, names its laws, and stops short of rulings until the chart library discussion happens.
Standing law touched
Motion law M1 says nothing on data moves, and a flashing pill breaks it as written. Rather than an exception, M1 is amended to say what it always meant: nothing moves to decorate. The intelligence layer may move only to report change that is happening now, and every signal settles when the change does. Reduced-motion still zeroes everything; the information must survive with motion off.
Three sketches, to make the discussion concrete
The live pulse
DRIFT +2.4%Rate moving now, against you
Pulses only while the rate is actually moving; settles to a plain chip the moment it stops. With motion off, the chip alone carries the fact.
The trend stroke
Outstanding$830,025
A hairline history under the figure, endpoint emphasized. Not a chart: no axes, no grid, one stroke of context.
The signature glyph
RSS 71 · Meridian
The six fixed RSS axes worn as a shape. Lab 11 rejected radar as a comparative chart; a signature glyph is a different job: recognition, not reading values. Candidate, not ruled.
Draft laws for the layer
I1 · Motion is a reportThe layer may animate only while the underlying data is changing, and settles when it does. Nothing loops forever, nothing moves to decorate.
I2 · Every signal degrades gracefullyReduced motion, print, and forced colours must all still carry the fact. Motion and colour are amplifiers, never the message.
I3 · Intelligence never blocks readingThe layer lives under, behind and beside the figures. It may never cover a number, shift a row, or steal a click.
I4 · One live signal per viewIf everything pulses, nothing does. A screen earns at most one moving signal at a time; the rest queue behind it.
What this waits on
Fadi is researching chart libraries and will bring the shortlist. The layer's rendering stack should be decided with the chart decision, because both draw on the same canvas. Until then: the laws above are draft, the sketches are conversation pieces, and nothing ships.
Ruled · 20 Aug 2026
Everything in this lab is settled.
The trip container mark is C, the TRP chip. Pinned right, full-cell hit target, hover reveals the container shape.
TAI's implementation stands. The command bar is its prompt surface: jump, search, ask in one field.
The module switcher is unlabelled, matching the entity card, and sits at the foot of the rail.
The theme switch lives in the user menu, not the top bar. The bar right of the command field is the bell and the pill.
The intelligence layer stays open. Bring the chart libraries when ready and the discussion starts from the draft laws and the three sketches above.
